Originally known as "Mont Rachet" (meaning "bald mountain"), it evolved over time to Montrachet. Legend has it that the name of this esteemed Grand Cru blanc stems from the land's division by the Lord of Montrachet between his two sons. one became a Knight "Chevalier" fighting the
